Tues 23rd Caley Crags

Postby John McMahon » Thu May 18, 2017 8:53 pm

It's Caley on Tuesday, the nearest crag to Leeds.
Could anyone help me out and lead this Meet?
I am really busy at the moment and as I am off to Pembroke for a week, I am pressed for time.
A pint in the Junction afterwards.

Cheers

Hi John,

Happy to lead the meet, have a good time in Pembroke.

I'll be there from about quarter past 5. The best parking is the second lay by that you come to coming from Leeds to Otley (by the gate). It can get quite busy if it's a nice evening so car sharing if possible would be a good idea.

The UKC page for Caley crags is here. https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crag.php?id=540

If you have a bouldering mat it may be worth bringing too as the bouldering near the crags is top class!

Post up if you are coming!

I'm elsewhere tomorrow evening now, but if I'm returning early enough - I'll swing by the Junction to see if you're lurking in there!

Btw - can it be made clear exactly which end of Caley you are heading to? The boulder-field end - which is usually approached from the parking along the main road - or the 'crag' end (with the more continuous outcrops, The Sugarloaf, etc) which is best approached from the parking near the Cheerful Chilli (though you can walk uphill on the track from the main-road parking too). They are two distinct areas and there is scope for confusion.

Also - feel free to trample or remove any Himalayan Balsam, which will just be coming through now. It's a real problem in the estate, choking out native vegetation in the cleared areas, and all the stakeholders have permission to try and clear it. There's often an organised volunteer session in June to keep it under control.

Hi James,

We will be at the crag end near the sugar loaf. I usually park in the lay by on the main Leeds-Otley road, then walk through the gate and up the track, turning right when the track meets another track. The first big boulders you come to will be the sugar loaf on the right and boot crack area on the left. The crags are past boot crack and slightly behind it.

Thanks for leading, Will. A great night had by all and I'm currently working on my patent application for the "chin bar".
